To appease Ma Lakshmi, people who can afford, purchase gold coins or ornaments, gold is considered lucky and daughters, wives, and even men are decked in gold on important days and festivals. Similarly, the festival of Akshaya Tritiya is a day when a lot of gold is purchased. This year Akshaya Tritiya falls on 9th May 2016.It is estimated that about 20 tonnes of gold are purchased/sold on Akshaya Tritiya.
