Hiranyakashyapuhad declared in his kingdom to worship him as a God.But to his great disappointment,his son Prahlad became an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu and Prahlada disobeyed his father and started worshipping Lord Vishnu.Hiranyakashyap used various means to destroy his son Prahlad but Lord Vishnu saved him every time. One time, Hiranyakashyap asked his sister, Holika to burn his son Prahlad with blazing fire with in her lap. because Holika had a boon from Lord Brahma whereby, Holika could have no effects from the burning fire.With malefic intentions in her mind, Holika enticed Prahlad to sit in her lap whereby she herself took her seat in a blazing fire. Prahlad kept chanting the name of Lord Vishnu with devotion and pure heart. The blazing fire could not kill Prahlad and he was saved by Lord Vishnuwhereby Holika got destroyed because she was not aware that the boon would work only if she enters alone in the fire.Thus, the festival Holi derived its name from the sister of Hiranyakashyap.
